8 Reasons Why You Should Not Vote Duterte for President

July 20, 2015 By Rig Man 358 Comments

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has continued to rise in surveys of preferred candidates for 2016 presidential election. He ranked 3rd next to Senator Grace Poe and Vice President Jejomay Binay in the Pulse Asia nationwide survey conducted from May 30 to June 5. Duterte is also one of the most popular and most preferred presidentiables by the netizens.

But should you vote for him this coming presidential election? Without further ado, here are 8 reasons why you should not vote Rodrigo Duterte for President. Enjoy!

1. Because he’s a lawyer and not a popular showbiz person
Rodrigo Duterte is a lawyer and a distinguished politician. He is not a famous actor or an action movie star. Davao City won several awards, including the National Literacy Hall of Fame Award, under the leadership of Duterte. The Mayor of Davao neither won a best actor award nor starred in a box-office film. So if your wish is to have a president who’s a famous movie star, then you have a reason to not cast a vote for Duterte.

2. Because he strictly implements discipline which may impair your absolute freedom
If you like getting drunk by drinking alcoholic beverages till dawn and drive your car like a racing star, then Duterte is not your president. Duterte banned the selling and consumption of liquors from 1am to 8am in Davao. He also signed an executive order to limit all kinds of motor vehicles in the city to maintain public safety and order. So if you don’t like your countrymen and yourself to be disciplined, find another leader.

3. Because he’s not from your province
Many Filipinos vote for a president who came from their province because they think that if their candidate will be elected, he or she will focus on the development of their region. If you don’t care for the other Filipinos outside your region or if you are electing a president who will help your province rather than your entire country, then you have a reason to not vote Duterte if you’re not from Davao or Southern Mindanao.

4. Because you are a solid loyalist to another candidate
If your loyalty to another presidential hopeful can’t be broken regardless of the incompetence and the acts of corruption that your idol has obviously committed, then nobody can change your vote but you. It’s difficult to abandon a politician whom you have campaigned, defended and fought for over the years, isn’t it? But did your hero politician protect you and your country over the years too?

5. Because you don’t like a more secure and peaceful country
Davao City is the 9th safest city in the world. You should not vote for Duterte if you don’t like CCTV cameras to be installed in every commercial center in the Philippines. You should not also elect him if you don’t like our country to have a word-class emergency response system like the central 911 which was implemented in Davao City. So if you’re planning to commit a crime or if you’re dreaming to be a drug lord, of course don’t ever think of making Duterte as your president or else you will be in big trouble.

6. Because he’s willing to abolish the Congress
Duterte has promised to end corruption by abolishing Congress and replacing it with a parliamentary federal form of government if he will be elected president. He also vowed to increase the salaries of government employees and privatize the BIR and other government collection agencies to improve their functions and services. Furthermore, he wants Filipino workers earning P25,000 per month and below to be exempted from paying taxes.

Thus, if you love Congress and you’re impressed with the performance of our congresspeople, if your salary as a government employee is already too much for your family’s needs, if you’re happy with our current tax system, and if you want corruption in the country to continue, then never mind voting for Duterte as president.

7. Because you don’t know him and you don’t like making a research
We’re too busy with our daytime jobs. We need to work hard to build a bright future for our children. Some Filipinos, especially the young generation, are also busy reading and following showbiz personalities rather than knowing our future leaders. If you think that researching or finding the best leader for our country is a waste of time and will not help your children and grandchildren, then stay as a clueless voter.

8. Because he will not run for president
Although Duterte has already a base of supporters who are willing to fund his presidential campaign, the Davao Mayor has not yet officially declared his bid for the 2016 presidential election as of this posting. So if he will not run for president this coming election, don’t write his name in the ballot box as a president because it will not be counted. Find another presidential candidate who has the capability to bring our country to peace and progress.

Final thoughts
Thank you for reading this article and not making comments based only on its headline. I know that this article sounds crazy but I’m pretty serious about the messages I want to convey to the Filipino people.

I’m not saying that you vote for Mayor Duterte for president. I just thought that he’s perfect for the context of this article. I’m not also campaigning for any presidential candidate, at least for now.

The 2016 presidential election is still several months away from now. We can still make further and deeper research to know who really is the one who will become the best president for our country.

Let us vote based on the capability, effectiveness and efficiency of the person, not on his or her popularity. Let’s vote for a president who will develop, not only our own province, but our whole country. Let’s support leaders, not because we are their solid loyalists, but because they can provide solid services.

Let’s elect leaders who will transform our nation into progress, not leaders who will transport our money to their pockets.

Now if you don’t want your family and loved ones to be protected and you just want some fancy walang kwentang politician to be your next president, Duterte is not for you. Iboboto ba namin sya countless of times dito sa Davao kung ayaw namin sa pamamalakad nya? Mag-isip ka ng mabuti.

Duterte has been in power since 1988. It is true that Davao is a good city, but it also took a long time to get there, with the cooperation of the city council. This is why his policies sail through and get approved and implemented. The city council has a lot less people than the two houses of congress, it is far easier to convince. Let us not forget that the presidency is just 6 years and changes in policy need the approval of both houses of congress. Effective implementation of laws require the cooperation of the governors and mayors, the PNP, the judiciary and the citizenry. Implementing one’s will is a lot easier in a city of just over two million than in a country with 100 million people.

Im gunning for Duterte, but just recently though. So its fair that I read on articles for him or against him. But this article just rubs me wrong. -_- It’s like the author just wanna be bashed. Really I wanna slap you.

Lets put it this way, people you will attract with this article.
    1. Are those thats interested with the headline and give the author a chance to explain his side. (like me)
    2. People who wanna bash you and dont even bother reading the rest of the article.
    3. People who are anti-duterte, but then again will bash you cause of the content.
    4. People who actually has critical mind, gets the meaning of the purpose of the article. Praise you a little then move on. (which I presume would be the minority here).

I just hate the fact that you made it to be sarcastic just to attract more readers. BUT o well thats your medium as a writer.

Anyway thanks for wasting my time and thanks for making me write this comment. This is my way to purge the feeling of being pissed. Though sorry for my grammar.

I think he’s worth my/OUR vote rather than those who are having campaigns already and all they do is giving FALSE PROMISES. One more thing.. NUMBER 1 is not necessary, its useless thought. haha!

I strongly agree for Duterte as president. Even though people say that a president only has a 6 year term, Duterte can still change things for a better Philippines. Try comparing the candidates many years ago and today. The candidates before 2000s have great achievements and high degrees of educational attainment. They compete against each other with a very good platform. But what about the candidates these days? Mostly, they are just celebrities; attracting people with their fame, not with their capability of being a leader. Others are just giving false hopes on poor people and mainly thinking about themselves. But with Duterte, he’s mainly thinking for the people. He’s not even afraid of anything that may happen to him, as long as he implements the law strictly for the citizens.

This is a good article!! And i mean it! I really hope that people would someday open their eyes in the reality of what we really need.

That is already the state of Philippines. TOO MUCH FREEDOM. People don’t care to follow even the most simplest of rules, even something as simple as a “No Crossing” sign is ignored, to the point that we have to put up 3-4ft. high fences just to discourage jaywalkers, but even then it is still ignored by a lot of people.

there is no such thing as “ABSOLUTE FREEDOM”. we have the freedom of speech, but we cannot make false statements; freedom to go anywhere, but not on another man’s property; freedom to consume any alcoholic beverages but not on public places, therefore, it is not absolute. all of our freedom guaranteed in our bill of rights will always be bounded by rules, and discipline must be instilled to follow even the simplest of rules.

I agree. BUT you know what’s the ultimate reason why a lot of competent presidentiables or any competent politician do not win in the election? The reason is actually because their campaigns seem to be not targetting the average Pinoys. As far as I have observed, most of us seem to go on what’s easy for us in our everyday life, especially in the decision making, isn’t it? That could be the reason why the average Pinoy rather vote on whom they know na “artista” (Im referring to the incompetent ones) or yung mga tipong “nagbibigay pera” during the campaign. It’s really sad to know this fact but I think this is what’s lacking right now. I do personally and totally agree with your post but I just don’t know if this is what the masses think as well?

Kaya sana naman, yung mga competent leader or supporters would really find a great time investing on finding ways on how to really take the hearts of average Pinoys. I’m not saying that they would resort to what the other “traditional” politicians do. Whatever or however it is, I personally don’t know yet. What I know is that (most of the time) nasasayang lang kasi yung mga boto natin. 🙁

So do you have a better choice as to who to vote for this coming elections? During elections, the people chooses someone who they think is the “better sinner”.

Duterte: strict implementation of rules, no issues of graft and corruption, the one and only 911 in the Philippines, made a really dangerous city as to one of the safest in the world, close ties with the NPA, the NPA respects him and vice versa, womanizer, is known to be bad to drug lords and other criminals, has “friends” who are corrupt in their own ways

Binay: “ganito kami sa Makati” ad though we have to take into account that Makati IS the business hub of Metro Manila (so the collected taxes there is way more than most, if not all, cities in the Philippines), people who have lived or worked there knows that there are two sides of Makati (the very rich and they very poor), graft and corruption issues, said to hide key witnesses in order to incriminate him further, no criminal record as of now, a family man

Grace Poe: inexperienced compared to the others, adopted daughter of one of the country’s greatest actor, no criminal record, no issues of graft and corruption, the masses ADORE her, did not grow up in the Philippines

Mar Roxas: married a newscaster which did not help with his politician charm, no issues of graft and corruption, most of the Filipinos think that he is not capable of leading the country as the President, relatively experienced, tries his best to serve the country well but the Filipinos just dont think its enough

Is there anyone else? Did I miss someone? I only read articles shared by my Facebook friends. I’m still not decided on who to vote for and considering that you’re well-researched, I’m curious as to who your presidentiable bet is? Please help me decide. 😉

9th Reason: BECAUSE HE IS NOT A SENATOR, A MILITARY MAN OR A HOUSEWIFE!!!

We voted Presidents after Presidents who were incapable of running the
executive branch, simply because they really have no knowledge and
experience to handle the branch really well. We tried a housewife, an
AFP General and Senators who seemed to be a good porn stars, because we
enjoyed every thrust they make while they fu**ed us. You should not vote
for Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, if you don’t want the Executive Branch to be
manned by a hands-on executive who truly have an extensive knowledge
and experience in running an executive office.

better search more, he did not gave a heroes burial for the fallen NPA leader, he only did his job as the mayor of the city, to ensure safety and public order. any mayor would also do the same, no one would order to disperse them and disrupt a peaceful burial rites, especially with a huge crowd like that. if you want a president who will ensure peace, safety and public order, then vote for Duterte.

illegal aliens criminals or not have equal rights, respecting it and ensuring their comfort is a sign of a good leader with good international diplomatic relations skills. another plus factor for Duterte.

paying revolutionary tax to the NPA, shows his intention to maintain peace and order in his city. criminals is different from revolutionary and ideological groups. during his address at the davao agri-expo in 2013, he said that “I cannot put it to a
stop. So factor that in your investments. If you pay to the BIR (Bureau
of Internal Revenue), you prepare also for the NPA.”, “I can talk, but I
can’t talk them out of their ideology. You have to realize the Communist
Party is entering its 45th year here. You have to admit there’s been
historical injustice committed on the people.” he explained further that “It’s a matter others want to avoid. But it’s a reality that has to be talked openly, since the NPA is more active now in Region 11″ he further clarified that “Crimes I can deal with it. But with the revolutionary (groups), I give it to the (national) government.”

openly talking and dealing with the revolutionaries made Davao City the 9th Safest Place in the World. showing your respect and recognizing once beliefs does not mean youre embracing it. maybe we learn from him and maybe we could have lasting peace!!

i agree. why privatize any agency? why not abolish those agencies who do not serve their cause? speaking of agencies.. most Filipinos abroad are quite concerned with manpower offices, for instead of helping our countrymen, are somehow ‘up our face’ victimizing kababayans by ignoring their welfare after extorting hard-earned money from them. most victims are working in the m.e. who are helpless enough to voice out their miseries & keeping mum about their horrible situation for them to enable to support their families back home. regarding guns for hire, most likely i see them either as the hangmen or executioners, if not the vigilantes.

Ramon Magsaysay who was unfortunately and suspiciously been killed in a plane crash because he tried to make peace with the communist. Duterte is charismatic and he got the Hutzpah.

I think we need someone like him currently…If only Duterte has economic vision other than dont break the law, maybe he would be a perfect candidate…Law will always be broken because we have a lot of poverty ! There is no POOR country in the world that has little crime ! We need social reform heavily to solve poverty. Getting rid of religion out of politics is a GOOD start !!!

They don’t want Duterte to be the President, because they are afraid Mindanao will separate from Philippines. How come,

    1. Duterte is a christian and never been a muslim.

    2. Maybe because he is a former Mayor from Davao and not in Northern part.

    3. Maybe also, he is not born from Davao, I believe it is from Dagupan, still Northern part of Philippines.

    4. they said, he don’t like drug lord, but Ilocanos like Bong Bong as a user also.

    5. 2016 election is still very far and Philippine Politics already reach in other countries like example Doha, Qatar. Everybody here-filipino I meet they said they are from Panggasinan, easy for you to land a job, because CID Middle East -organizer here in Doha are from Panggasinan. If you want to have a job immediately the CID intel operation will asked something in return to victimized innocent Filipinos, especially from Mindanao. what’s going on all filipinos now in northern part are all ilocanos from Panggasinan and broadcasting in fb + news that they are the most brilliant and beautiful people in the Philippines. Pe**eng ya**a- ang kulay lupa-nergo offer pass Mestizos race. Kuyawa uy. Ang mga kulay maid nag mukhang senorita nah.

    5. etc………what to do, I dont understand Ilocanos Political Ideology Philosophy

They like Bong bong Marcos because he is an APO to them, especially the ilocanos, it means he is GOD, how come.

They like Marcos because surely as formula to stop filipino muslims separating Mindanao from Philippines is Martial Law. Does Filipino Muslims want to be separated Philippine.

    1. Bangsamoro deal – is purely on natural resources exploitation which I find it very clever move fomr the muslims. It never mentioned anything about Mindanao Independence. All Muslim groups accepted this and blunder for them if they revert to Independence.

    2. Martial Law – Bong Bong will use this strategy again to get back their lost wealth taken by PCGG, from his Father, Ferdinan E. Marcos during Martial Law era atrocities and has an estimated $US 60B in cash + other stolen properties all over the world stolen from them. Pity for Mindanaoans + Philippine Central bank reserve funds, we will pay everything from our tax pocket to recover all their lost hidden wealth and still love by Ilocanos, especially Panggasinan, never been a birth place by marcoses. doesnt make any sense from them (his supporters).

    3. In lieu above, rule of the gun will always prevail no matter how strong it is against all laws implememted.

    4. etc…..anyway im tired of Philippine Marcos Political strategy, if i will write it all. wait on the my next comments to this issue.

There are many crucial reasons the author did not indicate.

He will fully support BBL (MILF original version)
    He will ban Facebook
He will never accept his failures and blame people
He will use the power of gun instead of justice system

if the president is all talk but no action, what do you think will happen to this country?
    2. freedom is still limited
what mayor duterte implemented in Davao city only made the city better. ex. liquor ban
the liquor ban has prevented more crimes in davao.

people have a different meaning of freedom, one has has to do with doing anything that pleases oneself, which is wrong in many aspects.
When we think of freedom we must still think of others needs, not our wants.

At, mas mabuti na yung ma disiplina tayo, kaysa sa demokrasya. Ex singapore leader, says that Philippines need more disipline rather than democracy, kaya baon tayo sa utang. And also takot kayo sa pagbabago against duterte, esp this author, gusto ng labis na kalayaan, kaysa madisiplina. In terms of reasons not to vote for Duterte I would have gone with he kills people… that in 25 years their way of getting ‘justice’ is still to kill people extra-judicially. That Davao is ‘officially’ the 9th safest city in the world because the State’s murders and crimes aren’t counted, and others are afraid to report crime to the police. But they’re just killing the criminals right? You don’t have to be afraid if you’re not a hardened criminal right? No. It’s mostly those who have committed petty theft… stolen food because they’re hungry. It’s included children who slept on the streets, as that’s a crime (vagrancy). And of course media and political opposition. Everyone loves a strong man because they think he will be on their side…

Or maybe I just don’t want to ‘make a research’.

    1. Because he’s a lawyer and not a popular showbiz person – Precisely. He is a lawyer who breaks the law.

    2. Because he strictly implements discipline which may impair your absolute freedom – I don’t know about you, but discipline is your parents’ responsibility, not your mayor’s.

    3. Because he’s not from your province – I’m voting for Miriam Santiago and she’s not from my province.

    4. Because you are a solid loyalist to another candidate – I’m not.

    5. Because you don’t like a more secure and peaceful country. – In fact I do. But I need someone who can rule a country but can also alleviate educational excellence, implement laws properly, empower people and not rule them by fear.

    6. Because he’s willing to abolish the Congress. – And start a dictatorship? No no. I love my freedom. Blame the bobotantes who vote for the corrupt people in Congress.

    7. Because you don’t know him and you don’t like making a research. – I did. He has 2 wives, a girlfriend, many kids, multiple cases in court for 700 extra judicial killings. He claims Davao is crime and drug free, when ironically, a friend who is a Duterte supporter went home a few months ago and smoked pot. There goes your drug free city.

    8. Because he will not run for president. – Believe me, he will. And I’m afraid he will win. The freedom we long fought for will cease to exist. There is a better option. MIRIAM SANTIAGO.

This whole vigilante business of his would be fine if he could keep control of his lapdogs, especially if he becomes the president and his death squad grows to encompass the entire country.

They’re all human after all…what’s to stop them from killing someone for even the slightest infraction? What about journalists and those critical of his vigilante ways? When the first drop of innocent blood is spilled on by his people and by extension himself…what then?

I for one am withholding my vote for an indeterminate amount of time. I am not contributing to this country’s destruction and am leaving that opportunity to the current generation of voters.

Good luck keeping this sinking ship afloat. You’ll need it.

We don’t expect our country to be change one snap of a hand because Digoy is not a fairy God father…we need progress a change a discipline, we need to bring back the law and order in our country, because right now in other foreign country,we’re just a piece of crap,a clown fish..if there’s a person who is capable to clean up all this chaos and mess it’s Duterte, and if most of us has sincerity to make our country to change,we should vote for Duterte……

This man represent the return of law and order to the Philippines, that is threat,he represents to his political opponents, because he would dismantle this lawless criminal enterprize that has victimized the Philippines for so long, they know he will removed the handcuffs and allow the enforcement on all levels to do their jobs without fear or retaliation just like he has done in Davao and made it the safest in the country,Philippines needs a man with some guts,Philippine military is not afraid to stand up in China even with their limited resources, they are not being allowed to fight and defend their countries territorial rights by the power that be,and that needs to change because a professional soldier does not mind a bloody nose as long as his opponent respect the fact he will fight and even sacrifice his life for what he believe is right….. duterte is that much needed change

Duterte represent the return of law & order to the Philippines, that is threat he represents to his political opponents, because he would dismantle this powerful lawless political family dynasties, that has victimized the Philippine taxpayers since the down fall of Marcos, politicians that have taken all and gaven nothing, they know he will remove the handcuffs an actually allow law enforcement on all levels to do their jobs without fear of criminal charges in retaliation for doing their job just like he has done in Davao and has made it safest city in the country in the middle of rebel Muslim,Mindanao,Philippines needs a man with some guts,Philippine military is not afraid to stand up to China even with their limited resources, they are not allowed to fight and defend their countries territorial rights held back by the powers that be who are afraid, and that needs to change because a professional soldier or a dedicated police officer does not mind a bloody nose as long as his opponent respects the law and fact he will fight and even sacrifice his life for what he believes is right………..Duterte is that much needed change

A President cannot make such call. It will require a charter change.

I have had too much background check on Duterte from his constituents and my preference for him is more objective, being based on first-person accounts of relatives and friends who live in Davao city, who have nothing but awe and inspiration for his style of leadership. I have gone to Davao and I am likewise awed and inspired with Davao as Exhibit A. I am happy with your article,Rig Man. Thanks.

I believed Grace Poe will be become the President,Why, she has an oligarch backers that can provide financial support (of course with a return later with a favor). Also Chinoy’s dream of not landing in Jail after his term.

I’m 14 and I think he should not be president because he thinks rape as a joke. Because he insist that women should change their appearances rather than men be thought to change their behaviour. Because he disrespected a public figure symbolizing as a beacon of hope for most people.
I get it that most people look at him as salvation. But cutting ties with people who are only trying to help us will only lead to the downfall of our country

Duterte is a bad example to the youth. Bad example all the way. When he says something offensive and make an excuse that “that is who I am”. wth? so all his term as president (GOD forbid!!) he will continue doing so, making that as an excuse. the Philippines is doomed. And not to forget to mention the followers, who would wish only ill wishes to those who think is he not good enough, so sickening how your brains reacts. birds of a feather flock together? psycho followers equals psycho leader? so doomed….
